Hepatitis C Increases Among Young Adults

By Sharon Ko

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Ever since a disease prevention center moved locations in Roseburg, it's seen an increase in Hepatitis C cases among young adults.

In the past four weeks, staff say a lot more people between the ages of 19 and 30 are testing positive.

Harm Reduction Center thinks more people are becoming aware of the dangers of IV drug use, especially with meth.

Staff say the dangers are increasing through the internet.  People are finding drug parties, sharing needles, and having unprotected sex, which puts them at risk for another disease.

"Your libido is extremely stimulated through a drug, then you're at a risk for HIV and aids.  Boom.  Co-infection.  So we're fighting that as well," said Jody Howell, Outreach Prevention Educator.

Staff say Hepatitis C can show up up to 30 years later.  The center encourages people to use its free testing center to check for Hepatitis C and HIV.
