Are You Maintaining A Healthy Heart?

By Paris Jackson

SPRINGFEILD, Ore. -- Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States, according to the American Heart Association.

In the spirit of American Heart Month, KEZI 9 News spoke to an expert at the Oregon Heart and Vascular Institute to learn tips on how to maintain a healthy heart.

Cardiovascular Wellness and Rehabilitation staff focus on what patients can do to prevent heart disease and treat it.  There are programs where people can learn about their cholesterol levels, blood pressure and diabetes status.  The facility also houses a gym, where folks can participate in supervised medical-based exercise programs.

Though heart disease is preventable, managers say it can target anyone. "For a man, woman, a young adult, heart disease is sort of non-discriminatory. So, we all need to take care of our hearts," Cardiovascular Wellness & Rehabilitation Manager Sarah Grall said.

Here's a few tips Grall said you can do to keep your heart healthy:
*Know your own risk
*Eat healthy and exercise
*If you're a smoker -- quit
*Work to manage a healthy weight and stress level
