Crimestoppers: Unsolved Glendale Murder

By Holly Menino

GLENDALE, Ore. -- On October 1st, deputies responded to this house on Azalea Glen Road in Glendale. Once inside, they found the resident 59-year-old Barbara Tooley dead. Her mother 88-year-old Helen Long was badly injured but still alive. Both women had been shot.

"It's out of the ordinary. It's a home invasion type of incident. This individual broke into the house and actually more or less during the daytime, it was early evening and then shot these two people," says Dwes Hutson of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

After talking with neighbors, police quickly started to search for the suspect. "There was quite an intense manhunt that went on for quite sometime in that area in a an attempt to locate this individual," says Huston.

But that manhunt came up short. Nearly three months after the shooting, police don't have a name, but they do have a sketch of the suspect and a possible vehicle description. Still, Douglas County authorities say this is a rare case for them.

"A lot of times when we have a homicide or a shooting incident, we have a pretty good idea of who it is that we're looking for and why they were involved, and this case is different than that," says Huston.

Authorities have taken the information they do have and posted it on billboards along highly traveled roads both north and south of Roseburg, hoping to generate some leads. "I think probably somebody out there might have some information that's key in helping us solve this thing," says Huston.

As for the one survivor, Helen long, police won't say much about her. "The only thing we can tell you is that she's still alive. I don't want to say anything further simply for security reasons," says Huston.
